The History of Sound plot
In the year 1916, during the First World War, the young men Lionel and David meet. A few years later, their paths cross again in Maine. In the summer, they travel together in New England. Their goal is to immortalize the lives, voices and music of their fellow countrymen.

Pianist Lionel [Paul Mescal] and singer David [Josh O'Connor] met at the conservatory. Lionel has discovered a passion for discovering and recording folk songs, and country boy David possesses a vast knowledge. The young men join forces to search remote locations in America for people willing to record the songs they know on wax cylinders. This search leads to an intimate relationship that is disrupted by the First World War. The often moving songs irrevocably evoke memories of Harlan County, USA in this beautifully acted and filmed romantic drama, undermined by its slow pace and lack of narrative. This is the first time I've seen anything by Hermanus. It is primarily a classically structured film. Stylistically very solid. Very enjoyable thanks to fine performances by Mescal and O'Connor, and often an eye for detail and beautiful use of music, including the folk songs. Occasionally, there is a beautiful standalone scene that rises above the level of the film as a whole.

A decent film about two American and British young men who meet during their college years. There are a number of good scenes, but in terms of content, this love drama is a bit on the boring and especially slow side. However, it does feature beautiful set design, locations, and certainly the music.
