Pangolins are anteaters that are threatened with extinction in their native African and Asian habitats due to the high demand for their claws and scales. Gareth Thomas finds a new purpose in life when he helps a baby pangolin during a covert operation in South Africa. To help the creature, named Kulu, Gareth leaves the city and embarks on a heartfelt mission to rehabilitate the vulnerable animal and prepare him for a life in the wild.

Beautiful documentary about businessman Gareth Thomas, who finds a new purpose in life when he helps a baby pangolin in South Africa prepare for a free life in the wild. Beautifully filmed and pangolin Kulu is endearing, but the subject is just a bit too limited for a running time of one and a half hours.

Pangolin scales are highly sought after, particularly in China, for their medicinal qualities. Activists in South Africa rescue pangolins from the hands of illegal traders. This documentary follows the long process by which Gareth Thomas helps a young pangolin prepare for a return to the wild. Thomas becomes visibly attached to the pangolin and assumes that the “love” is mutual. Ehrlich uses editing, music, and Thomas’s commentary to reinforce that impression. It helps that the pangolin is very photogenic, but the most interesting segment is the one in which 'ant doctor' Caswell Munyai describes how ants resist the pangolin, one of their primary natural enemies. Cute, but manipulative.
