Trailer is nothing special, the movie itself is phenomenal!!!

I really had a very surprising evening with this film.

The whole cast is top-notch, but Sean Penn, what a terrifying character he plays here. What class!!!

A film of almost 3 hours, that goes by very quickly and doesn't even feel like 3 hours.

Paul Thomas Anderson's best film by far, but also the best film of the year

Bring on the Oscars

Seen in Laser Ultra

Anderson's second adaptation of Pynchon (albeit a loose one, I'm told), and his second, rather mediocre one. I don't know if that's a coincidence, because this film is quite different from Inherent Vice. Much more straightforward and plot-driven. This also makes it quite different from many other PTA films, which focused more on atmosphere and, above all, characters (just think of the last film before this one—Licorice Pizza was a series of disconnected moments, but a blissful dream, so to speak). And those characters always felt alive and were, first and foremost, well-written, people you grew to care about.

Not so with this "One Battle After Another." The characters are often interchangeable, especially since the acting is generally somewhat flat. Not only by DiCaprio, who contributes very little, but also by many supporting roles. Yes, even Penn and Del Toro are rather colorless. And so, this is a film with excellent pacing (the 161 minutes fly by smoothly), with occasionally beautiful, dreamy images and a pleasant atmosphere of the Californian backwoods, but also a film that doesn't really move me. Not in terms of the characters, and not cinematically. The theme also hangs in the balance, serving more as a support for the plot than as a source of urgency. Without the themes of immigration and racism, you could essentially have had the same plot (with some necessary adjustments).

All in all, I was a bit lacking the wow factor. Or the dry humor of the Coen brothers, which the film occasionally hints at. Two scenes stand out. Halfway through, with the invasion, that scene is perfectly composed in terms of rhythm, pacing, imagery, and color. And the chase on the hilly roads with its strong use of zoom, there are some really cool visual ideas in there.

In short, an entertaining film that's far from bad, but nothing more than that. And that's a disappointment for PTA. 3.5*.

A beautiful film about a former activist who fled with his daughter. A compelling story told here by Paul Thomas Anderson. Tightly edited, the tension is maintained throughout. There are also some good action scenes (with the chase on the undulating road as the highlight) and excellent performances from the entire cast.

Temper your expectations: not because this film isn't a masterpiece, but precisely because the first half hour—brilliant as it is—might be a bit disappointing. While the pace is good from the start, it takes a while before you're truly overwhelmed. What follows is a breathtaking rollercoaster ride full of masterful performances, fantastic sound design, incredibly dry black humor, and visual delights.

This is cinema that exudes craftsmanship, with the cast and crew undeniably giving it their all. DiCaprio, Penn, and newcomer Chase Infiniti are absolutely exceptional. Kudos to this great work, which, in my opinion, is an instant classic.

4.5 stars.

The Sisterhood of the Brave Beavers, to name just one example of the many names and codes that thunder by in this film. DeCaprio is excellent, Penn is superb in his role. The contradiction between the organized government and a group of CAC members, an extremist club, and French 17, etc., is well-conceived in terms of organization. On the other hand, they also resemble each other. Right wing, left wing, in a political narrative where Viva la revolucion echoes Guevara. What is well-depicted is how a ruling power uses techniques to justify its policies. On the other side, there's the group of ragtag revolutionaries who seem to primarily advocate for refugees and the lower class. Within this, DeCaprio and Penn maneuver at a distance, with a young 16-year-old woman at their core. The finale is impressive, with a perfectly chosen route and road surface. Much of geopolitics is referenced, and despite the attempted humor, the undertone is deadly serious. Inclusivity meets exclusivity. The power of membership groups versus the soloist. 4.7*
