McConaughey is at his colorful best as a flamboyant, tenacious beekeeper, Amziah King, who comes to the police's aid in an investigation into honey theft. When Amziah's honeycombs are stolen, Officer Sutherland [Bruce Davis] knows that an opportunistic businessman [Kurt Russell] is behind it, but due to a lack of evidence, he can do nothing. Amziah's former foster daughter [Angeline LookingGlass] decides to take justice into her own hands with the help of Amziah's friends. The first half is an idiosyncratic character study that exposes the social structures within a remote American village community. Bluegrass music plays a significant role in this. The second half could have been a decent crime thriller, but Patterson makes no attempt to build suspense. Instead, he keeps bombarding you with bluegrass that starts to get quite tiresome. Well-written, but mediocrely directed. Patterson has seen Deliverance (and explicitly refers to it), but hasn't understood what that nail-biter does to earn his reputation.

Actually quite nice and fairly original. At one point, I think after half an hour or so, the film started to meander so much that I wondered where it was all going, but eventually the focus returns.

The whole thing relies heavily on Deep South clichés, with McConaughey as the usual suspect, but that isn't really a bad thing. I found the role of Angelina LookingGlass slightly less successful; she is likeable and cute, but not really a big actress yet.

The film may want to polish the mythical luster of cowboy culture in the US, and the bee colony and beekeeping certainly serve as a metaphor for life in Oklahoma: the community is close-knit (and not racist: a native, mind you, is taken into their hearts!) and conservative (you'd better stay away from their pickup tricks!), where people work hard to build a life while the competition is ruthless (they are no socialists!), even resorting to murder and other crimes to become the 'queen bee' oneself. The idea, however, is much better than the film: the first half consists mainly of lame humor surrounding community building through singing and playing together, which I endured with vicarious embarrassment, and when the joker is dead after an hour the film becomes more serious and better, although the plot remains messy and not really interesting.
