Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer plot

Fritz Bauer was Germany's youngest judge in 1930 and became politically active against the Nazis. After the seizure of power, he was imprisoned in a concentration camp and emigrated to Denmark after his release. When the Nazis start deporting Jews there too, he flees to Sweden and lives in hiding there. After the end of the war, he returns to Germany and makes a valuable contribution to tracking down war criminals.

Not so long ago I saw Operation Finale (2018) in which the hunt and kidnapping of Adolf Eichmann was highlighted from Argentina. This Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer focuses on what happened in Germany itself. An item that was less known to me and despite the fact that Bauer succeeded in his plan - namely having Eichmann tried - it was anything but obvious to achieve this through political means. It still had to happen via Israel.

The love-hate relationship with its past played a major role in Germany when it came to Nazi persecution. Many escaped the dance and held influential positions within the straitjacket of moderate parties after the war. Others were hunted, sometimes intensely, also latently, so that the real motives often remain two-sided.

Interesting film in which today's Germany (and its film industry) does not shy away from its uncomfortable past. Excellent performances in this biographical thriller. At any moment you thought an attack could be committed.

Normally these kinds of films are easy for me, but I found very little in this one. That is not due to the actors, because they do a decent job, but to the boring script, which made the film a long-winded story in which, in the end, little happens. The secondary storyline about homosexuality is a disturbing factor in several ways. I had imagined a film about the arrest of Adolf Eichmann very differently.

Good film about a German-Jewish lawyer who wants to bring war criminals to justice after the Second World War. Not the only film about the arrest of Adolf Eichmann, but that is not central here. The main character is portrayed in an interesting enough way in this entertaining historical drama/biopic with thriller elements. The film is set in the late 1950s and is dressed up well for that quality.
