Victor Frankenstein [Oscar Isaac] and the creature [Jacob Elordi] he created tell their story to the captain [Lars Mikkelsen] of a ship trapped in the ice while attempting to reach the North Pole. In the first half, Victor explains how and why he created the creature, and the creature describes what it has experienced since Frankenstein's unsuccessful attempt to destroy it. A dazzling production with superb cinematography and beautiful sets and costumes. The special effects are disappointing, and Del Toro takes a very long time to unravel the underlying (and superficially developed) themes. This slow-paced narrative therefore runs twice as long as Tod Browning's still superior 1931 version.

With Guillermo del Toro at the helm, you know you're in for a visual treat. Beautiful sets, atmospheric filming, and attention to detail. This story is more focused on the original version and more closely resembles the film Frankenstein (Film, 1994), although del Toro's film is simply better in terms of visual splendor. The story is carefully constructed and focuses on the various characters. Christopher Waltz is always entertaining, and Mia Goth has established herself as the horror icon of recent years with a few high-profile films. Here, she once again makes something of her role. Of course, as a viewer, you're familiar with the story, and the film doesn't really surprise you, but del Toro does provide a few additions, such as the wolves, an expanded narrative element surrounding the blind man, and Waltz's role. A downside is the power of Frankenstein's monster, which comes across as over the top in certain scenes, such as pushing the ship out of the ice. But certainly not bad and visually enjoyable. 7/10

I watched this film with some skepticism. How many Frankenstein movies have there been now? And now a new one? Since Boris Karloff, it's all been the same old thing. And I was completely amazed by what Netflix and Guillermo del Toro had done with it. They spared no money or resources to make a truly excellent film.

The set and extras (many of them) in sublime costumes made me sit up. Back in the days, those Sissi films also paid so much attention to telling a believable story. The film doesn't immediately begin with the mad scientist bringing a creature to life. No, the story begins with how that mad scientist grew up and what ultimately drove him to create a creature. Christoph Waltz's performance was (as expected) sublime again; a sneaky, wealthy arms manufacturer (who cheers when another World War breaks out) willing to invest in that crazy project. The film also shows the human side of the creature. In many films, he's portrayed as a creature who kills people because people start screaming in horror. The story is very good. It draws the viewer into a crazy adventure. The film never stops. It just keeps going until the very end.

All in all, a very good and entertaining film. The quality is high. Netflix has repeatedly proven in the past that it can also produce films worthy of theatrical release. They are in no way inferior to Hollywood. And the same goes for other streaming services like HBO, Disney, and Amazon. They earn so much money worldwide that they can also produce films worthy of Hollywood.

Such a Terrifying entrance for the film, and the Horror of what is happening that we are to be witness to.

Mia Goth is a Force to be Reckoned with, the more you're witness to her Veracity she gives each character is Unparalleled.

The visuals are exceedingly spectacular and colorful and the dark hues filled with a beautiful gothic macabre to each piece making a whole.

A new perspective comes to light, one of Loneliness, Trauma, and of Yearning to part of this life as we call it. Life lessons being learned and lived, even if only too briefly, and then once again the inevitable search through the loneliness continues.

Such a Beautifully Haunting version of a favorite tale I've sought after, in so many many years to see in any incarnation. This is a must see for fans of Gothic Literature, and Especially the Frankenstein Novel.
