I didn't know this beforehand, but the lead role here is for Rudy Ray Moore, the man who also played Dolemite. Now I haven't seen Dolemite in its entirety, but I have seen clips and My Name is Dolemite which is about the making of that film. And yes, that was cheap, over-the-top slapstick and cheesiness from a guy who thought he was very funny - nice as the subject of a film, funny to see a few clips of, but a whole film of this kind of nonsense didn't seem like such a good idea to me.

Now Petey Wheatstraw seemed to be exactly that kind of film. Petey mainly acts like a show-off who thinks he's way too cool. Who walks around with a big mouth to everyone, an expert in kung fu with the most fake effects and BOOM! POW! sounds, and who teaches the local junkies and gangsters a lesson. But after half an hour he gets shot in the face and it seems to be getting bizarre and fun for a while. But it's amazing how you can still make such a boring film with such an absurd plot (see the short summary, even though it's not really correct). With a hero who isn't funny at all. There are certainly some entertaining parts, with some cool live music, the few scenes where things get really weird like sometimes with the devil, but unfortunately the focus often goes back to Moore. Who is not nearly as funny as he thinks he is.
