23 Brieven van Vincent plot

The film “23 Letters from Vincent” covers the period from September 11 to December 5, 1883, when Vincent travels through Drenthe and writes 23 letters, mainly to his brother Theo. The young, ambitious, relatively uninhibited Van Gogh is still full of dreams. For example, he wants to start an artists’ colony in Southeast Drenthe. Nature and the real life of people in the peatland inspire him.

Pleasantly surprised by this film and by friend Rob

The tormented Vincent van Gogh hopes to rediscover himself as an artist on a retreat in Drenthe.

Back to basics is the idea. Once there, he encounters quite a bit of resistance from the local population and finds himself in a dilemma between his love for the landscape and the ever-increasing pressure of loneliness and feeling misunderstood. The film is told through letters to his brother Theo. Both in the voice-over and in terms of acting, lead actor Pim Muda is convincing as Van Gogh. The images of the Drenthe landscape speak for themselves. I would best describe the film as a dreamy, at times philosophical and surreal ode to artistry, Vincent van Gogh, and not least our beautiful Drenthe. Hats off!
