Mediocre film in which a foreign assassin is hired to kill a president in order to start a revolution. As a thriller it is a bit disappointing, because it never gets exciting. Furthermore, the interaction between the two main characters (although well cast) is rather slow and boring, this could have had some more psychological fireworks. Recorded in Mexico and that produces some nice pictures here and there.

Underrated. Nice and atmospheric picture, with a lot of Mexican couleur locale (often literally). Le rapace chooses a quiet pace but effortlessly managed to hold my attention. I also think it is a quite original story setting: a foreign hitman who, together with a local revolutionary, waits for his chance to kill the president of Mexico in a remote village. The relationship between Lino Ventura as a professional assassin and Xavier Marc as a naive idealist gradually becomes more interesting, without it all being explicitly spelled out. Then there is the music by Francois de Roubaix, who two years later also provided the score for Dernier domicile connu. It doesn't get as supporting as there, but it is still worth it. Cinematography and editing are well done; a special mention for the Seven samurai shot (running through the bushes, with matching music!). The image quality of Le rapace is also exceptionally good for a film from this period. So enjoyed this hidden gem from the 60s on Netflix.

I don't know if it was the "Mexican" president or just the president of a fictional Latin American republic. Ventura plays a hardened anonymous French hitman who is assigned to kill the local tyrant when he comes to visit his mistress in a small dusty village. The successor is to be the young inexperienced grandson of a former president... What he doesn't know (but suspects) is that his clients will want to get rid of him right after that...

Much time is spent on the old hand's unsympathetic treatment of the young lad. It's not that the old man doesn't respect the future "hero of the nation"; later in the film you understand that he actually wants to prepare the boy with his wisdom to take over the helm and make it clear to him what is needed for that.

Not a bad adventure film, not the best either, but with Lino Ventura (the French Clint Eastwood), who always knows how to steal the show. The music is not by Ennio Morricone as you might think.
