Michel en de Handen op Zijn Huid plot

In 2014, actor and director Michel Van Dousselaere was diagnosed with a rare form of progressive aphasia, a brain disorder that caused him to lose his ability to speak and deteriorate physically. Michel's widow and filmmaker Irma Wijsman portrayed the four young people who cared for him and investigated the impact that caring for Michel had on them. Providing care at a young age enriched them and, in turn, their presence gave her the opportunity to organize tailor-made care for Michel in a way that suited him.

Michel, Actor Loses His Words was Wijsman's portrait of her beloved Michel van Dousselaere, a gifted actor who loses his ability to speak due to progressive aphasia. This sequel is a portrait of the bond Irma built with the four students who were caregivers in Michel's last years of life. Two years later, they say goodbye to Michel together by spreading his ashes on a mountain in Spain where Michel liked to walk. During this pilgrimage, Wijsman talks about what caregivers mean to her, Michel and the young caregivers. The personal confessions give this documentary a somewhat uncomfortable, voyeuristic aspect. Is this a courageous film about coping with grief or an ego document of a narcissistic filmmaker? Both positions are defensible.
