Although he is over 80 and singing is clearly becoming increasingly difficult for him, singer and songwriter Paul Simon throws himself wholeheartedly into his new album 'Seven Psalms', receiving musical and moral support from his wife Edie Brickell and his good friend (and brilliant musician and arranger) Wynton Marsalis. Gibney seizes this opportunity for a monumental (220m) retrospective on the musical legacy of one of the most important American songwriters of his generation. With wisdom and resignation, Simon looks back in a sober, candid manner on his youth, the friendship and collaboration with Art Garfunkel, the decision to end the collaboration, the turbulent marriage to Carrie Fisher, his career as a solo artist and as a filmmaker and his collaboration with musicians from a completely different culture. Naturally, there is extra attention for his most famous albums 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' (with Art Garfunkel) and 'Graceland'. Gibney makes the connection between the music and the social developments of the moment the music appeared, but leaves out the five albums that Simon made after 'The Rhythm Of The Saints' (1990). Too bad, because that music deserves rediscovery.

More than 3 hours of documentary about Paul Simon. The length already suggests that this is mainly a documentary for enthusiasts. The singer is already over 80 and it also feels like a quiet look back to a long time ago. But we do get to see an extensive picture of the musician. So that it is more than just facts. It is an attempt to find an explanation for choices, songs and events. From the time with Garfunkel to his solo singer-songwriter albums to the African rhythms of Graceland, among others. We get to see images of other people, but only Simon himself is really speaking in the camera. Fortunately, we also hear Garfunkel regularly. Still important around the periods when things were more difficult. More than 3 hours is a long sitting, but it is also a long career in which there is a lot to tell.
