"If you follow the instructions, what could go wrong?"

The Substance brings a new product to the market that enables someone to become a better version of themselves in every respect. It is also possible to obtain this version that is both younger and more beautiful. On the other hand, you have to divide your time; a week for one person and a week for the other. As long as this balance is respected, nothing can go wrong. Or is it?

saw in the sneak preview, happened to read something about this movie a few days ago and now suddenly as a sneak preview! somehow I expected beetlejuice. Quite daring that they put this in the sneak but also cool. The movie holds your attention from the start and there is a fantastic build up... but don't watch it on an empty stomach, every now and then the movie really goes over the top. I can imagine that some people walk out of the theater (didn't happen at the sneak I think)

I'll think about the rating I want to give and I'll see the movie at my own risk muhahaha

Last night I finally went to see this movie after reading all the reviews that talked about the omnipresent gore. I am a big fan of David Cronenberg's movies so I have seen quite a bit of body horror.

Demi Moore literally shows herself from all sides and I think she plays her best role ever. Very intense as she plays her role. Margaret Qualley as the other Elisabeth pales in comparison. Dennis Quaid plays a wonderfully over the top media magnate. A role that was apparently first given to Ray Liotta.

The electronic score resonates through the room and fits the film very well.

The first half of the film is very good and then you feel that it will of course go in a more extreme direction and eventually to a bizarre finale.

I wasn't blown away by the gore but there is at least 1 scene that is quite shocking.

All in all a very captivating film that is supported mainly by the acting of Demi. Already a cult film as far as I'm concerned.

Elisabeth Sparkle [Demi Moore], a 50-something with an Oscar and a star on the Walk of Fame, hosts an aerobics program (a la Jane Fonda) on television. By chance, she overhears a phone call in which producer Harvey (!) [Dennis Quaid] completely trashes her and hints at a younger replacement. Apparently, that's enough to destroy her self-confidence to the point that she lets herself be persuaded to travel to a slum to pick up a nasty substance with a giant injection (but no instructions) in a dilapidated building and ... If it weren't for that annoying soundtrack, I probably would have fallen asleep during this. Not funny, just extremely exaggerated. Not scary, at most disgusting. The worst movie since Battlefield Earth (2000) with a ridiculous story, ridiculous twists, embarrassingly bad acting and insane references to The Elephant Man, Carrie, Vertigo, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Hellraiser III (?!). Fargeat won a Palme d'Or for her screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival. But then again, a Palme d'Or has become the equivalent of a Razzie awarded by people with no sense of humor.

Eternal youth is handed out somewhere in a stuffy alley. How people, society and the media deal with growing old has been a goddamn thing for years, but Coralie Fargeat averts this in a striking way with The Substance. Fantastic roles by the two leading actresses. Although, there really is only one...?
