Madagascar in the present day. Kwame, who is twenty, struggles to make a living in the clandestine sapphire mines. An unexpected event brings him back to his hometown. As he reunites with his mother and old friends, he is confronted with the rampant corruption plaguing his country. He will have to choose between easy money and loyalty, between individualism and political awakening.

I think it's my first Malagasy film (I think you spell Madagascar like this, but I could be wrong). It doesn't really excel in anything, with a mostly simple story about a poor boy who, back in the city, is faced with the dilemma of whether and to what extent he will go along with his corrupt, criminal childhood friend. And some family and historical drama, about police violence and abuse of power, which provides some extra family drama but doesn't add much. But it is entertaining, partly because of the new insight into Madagascar for me in a suitably modest playing time, and because of a fairly prominent role for the music. In the film made by Kwame's deceased father, but it is quite cool afrobeat that I could digest well.
