Cecilia is a religious woman who is offered a new position at a renowned Italian monastery. She initially receives a warm welcome in the picturesque Italian countryside. However, this is soon disrupted when it becomes clear to Cecilia that her new home harbors a number of dark and gruesome secrets.

Fortunately, there are few people in the cinema, which is always useful when watching a horror film. Sydney Sweeney plays a young nun living in an Italian convent. Such a centuries-old building with the rather rigid religious strict nuns and a lot of legends is the ideal setting for a horror film. The title already gives something away, for those who are familiar with the Catholic Church. But it is quite attractively done. Immaculate doesn't do much new, but fans of the genre will love this.

Cecilia [Sydney Sweeney] narrowly escaped death as a child and partly because of this decided to become a nun. After the closure of her congregation in the US, she is invited to work in a 17th-century nursing home for nuns in the Italian countryside. If you have a little religious knowledge, the title is enough to predict what will happen next. Mohan throws in some references to Rosemary's Baby (with a dash of The Omen), but only reaches a level more reminiscent of The Nun . The second half contains a few gruesome scenes, but by then the scenario has gone to the absurd. But my goodness, how Sweeney can scream!

Nice horror work and a considerable progress for director Michael Mohan. Judging from the trailers, my expectations were very low, perhaps this helped me appreciate the final result a little better. That does not alter the fact that it took a long time for Sydney Sweeney to get into her character properly and the first half makes a little too much use of unnecessarily sudden scares. The atmosphere is well set and is used excellently to build up tension, especially in the final phase. In between there are also strikingly graphic acts of violence and interesting angles, despite the fact that few of those approaches are really fully developed. The first half is moderately interesting, but once Immaculate is released, the viewer is guaranteed solid horror entertainment with enough tension, atmosphere and even gore.
