I couldn't connect with it as much. On the one hand, the film's theme is typical of Cronenberg. He stays close to the core of many of his films. At the same time, it is clear that it is very personal. This film also exists because of the death of Cronenberg's wife, and the man himself is well past 80 (and plays a corpse himself).

What I struggle with a bit, though, is that the film ultimately doesn't go anywhere. I was left with an unsatisfied feeling afterwards. I think Cronenberg intended more of an uncanny feeling because there is no catharsis or resolution, but there is actually barely a point at all. I also had an issue with Cassel in the film who I didn't think worked at all. But it is a film I want to see again once I've seen a lot more of Cronenberg. This is my ninth, and that is still somewhat limited. My experiences with him are mixed.

Cronenberg or not what a weak boring nonsense. I have to admit I fell asleep for a quarter of an hour.

This doesn't interest me, and Cassel wasn't really convincing...terrible.....

Cronenberg through and through, both in content and style, but this is certainly not his best work. The script is too aimless and especially too transparent for that. The subject, enabling people to see their deceased loved one decompose, is absolutely bizarre and Cronenberg-worthy, but the plot and characters gradually become less interesting. It's all too obvious. Too bad, because the film starts off quite strong and Vincent Kassel is pleasant in the lead role, despite the many dialogues and especially monologues, which he clearly has trouble with. There is a lot of talking in this film anyway. Too much.
