Rust plot
"Redemption isn't given, it's taken."
In 1880s Kansas, a thirteen-year-old boy must fend for himself and his younger brother after the death of their parents. The two flee with their long-estranged grandfather. He has been sentenced to prison for the accidental murder of a local farmer.

13-year-old Lucas [Patrick Scott McDermott] is sentenced to death for the murder of an intimidating rancher. First his great-aunt [Frances Fisher] pleads for clemency to no avail, but soon after Lucas is freed from prison by Harland Rust [Alec Baldwin], who has his own reasons for helping Lucas. While Lucas is torn between his desire for freedom and the responsibility for his little brother [Easton Malcolm], bounty hunter Fenton 'Preacher' Lang [Travis Fimmel] opens the hunt for Lucas and Harland. A delightful, but slow and much too long (139 min.) old-school western with an abundance of characters and caricatural performances. Dedicated to cinematographer Halyna Hutchins who was killed in a shooting incident on the set for which Baldwin was charged and acquitted.

A good western with all the trimmings. Manhunt, shootouts, saloons, sweeping landscapes, Indians... This is the kind of western I enjoy. Nothing new under the sun, but meticulously crafted. An important additional contribution is the reflection on orphans who had a very hard time in those days. Often, like Lucas, they had to assume all responsibilities as adults and were de jure tried as adults. Harland Rust, the man in the title, is a blood relative of the boy and wants to give him a second chance and, for himself, to atone through this good deed for the bad path life has led him down.. Blood relationship is, incidentally, an important motif in the film.
Despite all the commotion surrounding the shocking shooting incident involving Baldwin and the accidental death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the film was made after all, and we can only be glad about that. There is, by the way, a post-credits scene about that. And it must be said that her work is truly excellent. The Western atmosphere is thrilling and rendered with great aesthetic sense, and you certainly get your money's worth. I find both the low average rating and the lack of attention for Rust unjustified. It deserves better.
