In the Netherlands, colonial history is slowly but surely being rewritten. It had been clear for some time that what the Dutch government at the time called 'police actions' – the deployment of the army after Indonesia's declaration of independence in 1945 – was in fact an unlawful war. But the term 'war crimes' is still sensitive. This documentary reveals how far the Dutch rulers went in selling the war as a domestic affair, intended to restore peace among the population.

The documentary makes it clear that the Netherlands waged an unlawful war in the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia in the late 1940s. At that time and for decades later, that war was transformed with euphemistic language (police actions) and propaganda films into a legitimate action to liberate the native population (natives) from the 'illegal' Indonesian regime.
