Definitely The Oceanic Six. I also really agree with your piece, but I give it a slightly lower score. But this film is certainly one of the best to come out this year.
The ending is a bit too melodramatic and too Hollywood. You saw that about the ejection seat coming from afar (why else is part of a conversation suddenly shown from a distance so that you don't hear it? Why does someone just say in a speech that ejection seats were not used during the war because human lives did not count for much at the time? ?). The fact that Noriko is still alive is not necessarily the case, but it feelsreally unnecessary.
But oh, there are so many other qualities in this. First of all, the setting in bombed-out Japan just after the war. Japan with a trauma, also because of the two atomic bombs. But also full of guilt of a kamikaze pilot who did not dare (really the old culture, live short and hard and fall quickly like the Sakura does every year) and sadness. This is where Godzilla belongs, after all, this is where he originated.
And yes, apparently the film cost a pittance but it looks really good. Certainly, the American versions look slightly better, but this film is not inferior and when Godzilla blows up half a city with his atomic breath I was watching in admiration. Often full of suspense and sometimes with impressive action. In any case, the fear is palpable.
It also helps that the characters are well written. The characters are part of that time, that period and therefore more than just another family that escapes a disaster. These are people who come out of a drama, want to rebuild and get into a drama again. This means something and you really start to care about them. Despite the Hollywood ending, I felt him. The only real minor downsides are that the acting is a bit too theatrical at times and sometimes the film runs a bit too syrupy. 4.0*.

Went to Pathe Ypenburg yesterday. I saw the trailer and I thought I should see this in the cinema where the sound and action come into its own. I am absolutely not a Godzilla fan, but I do enjoy well-made action/adventure films. I had my doubts a bit when I saw that it was from 12 years old... then I immediately thought, how horrible can this Godzilla really be? And that was indeed disappointing... the trick from Jurasic Park was repeated a few times (the man in the toilet, everyone knows this scene) and that was it...
It was very difficult for me to get used to the Japanese actors who, in my opinion, came across as a bit too exaggerated and 'played'. That is of course also their style, but if you have been watching American films for 30 years, you might automatically start to compare and be annoyed by it.
And then the film lasts about 2 hours, most of the action of which you have already seen in the trailer. it's a lot (really a lot) of Japanese talk about actually a lot of nonsense that doesn't get you involved with the main characters at all. The action scene where Godzilla came ashore was cool and beautifully made, but I think it should have lasted longer and possibly a second time.
Too bad, this film was not for me unfortunately, perhaps more for people who are real fans of this genre and already watch Japanese films

Patience will be rewarded. After 25 years of being exposed to Godzillas and their ilk that destroy cities and stupid people that do nothing but (in vain) use increasingly heavier weapons to fight it, screenwriter and director Takashi Yamazaki finally brings a film that stands out in terms of approach. and level can compare with Godzilla/Gojira from 1954. The prologue takes place in the last days of the Second World War. Koichi Shikishima [Ryunosuka Kamiki] has been ordered to sacrifice himself as a kamikaze pilot for the homeland. Instead, he delivers his plane for repairs. However, there appears to be nothing wrong with the plane. Koichi unexpectedly gets the chance to restore his honor when the airbase is attacked by a monster and he is able to shoot it down. He doesn't get it done and carries the shame of his shortcomings with him. After the war, he returns to his hometown and discovers that it has been destroyed by firebombs and that his family has been killed. Koichi gets another chance for rehabilitation when the monster, which has now grown considerably, is on its way to destroy Japan again a while later. Well-written characters and various current social themes are cleverly woven into this pleasant, but not entirely logical SF action film that will hopefully inspire more of the same.
