"Don't rush, die slow."

Emily Young, a senior, is running for president of her sorority. She adopts a cute sloth and thinks it could become the new mascot and help her win. She names the sloth Alpha and the new pet seems to be a much-loved addition to the sorority house, until a string of deaths suggests the sloth is the prime suspect.

Director Matthew Goodhue's second horror feature clearly aims for the absurd, but unfortunately this extremely special concept does not last long. Alpha the Sloth is of course a show stealer and regularly manages to be comical thanks to the bizarre ideas of screenwriters Bradley Fowler and Cady Lanigan. However, the final film ultimately works much better as a short film, which means that Slotherhouse quickly makes a drawn-out and redundant impression, and Goodhue compensates considerably little when it comes to the horror itself. The slasher elements are tame in nature and after you see Alpha being murderous three times, the fun quickly disappears. In addition, the cast's acting is unprecedentedly mediocre and relies far too heavily on poorly conceived stereotypes. As the ending progresses, the film provides a socially critical layer, but unfortunately the scenes that take place beforehand ensure that you cannot take this very seriously. Most of the points go to the development of the sloth itself, because Goodhue does little about it.

In itself it was quite a good idea, but the execution is completely wrong, because for a comedy there is remarkably little to laugh at, and for a horror it is a bit scary. The idea of using an obviously self-made toy animal for the sloth ('no animals were used in this film') was also quite good, but not sufficiently over the top to really hit home.

And the biggest flaw of the whole thing. Something like that requires tankers full of fake blood, body parts dripping from the ceiling, and a body count that you lose count after two seconds. The latter was just successful, but that was because I fell asleep. Shame.
