The Return plot

"Some legends are more than myths."

After twenty years of absence, Odysseus washes up on the coast of Ithaca, ragged and unrecognizable. The king is finally home, but much has changed in his kingdom since he left to fight in the Trojan War. His beloved wife Penelope is now a prisoner in her own home, hounded by her many ambitious suitors to choose a new husband and king. Their son Telemachus, who grew up fatherless, is in danger of being killed by the suitors who see him as an obstacle. Odysseus has also changed. Marked by his wartime experiences, he is no longer the mighty warrior his people remember. But he is forced to confront his past in order to regain the strength needed to save his family and regain the love he lost.

Surprisingly low score, although I can see from the voters that I should perhaps take that with a grain of salt. It is not a masterpiece, but still a very nice film adaptation of the end of the odyssey. It is a film that, as far as I can see, follows the source material quite directly. Ralph Fiennes is looking very difficult as the tormented Odysseus, but the film looks beautiful and certainly knows how to convince on the big screen as a Greek epic. With a beautiful setting and a lot of bloodshed as is customary in ancient Greece. Do not expect unexpected twists or comic interludes, it is a film that works towards the end deadly serious the entire duration. But that still worked fine for me.

Ten years after the Greeks led by Odysseus defeated their Trojan enemies with the legendary Trojan Horse, not a single member of this heroic expedition has returned to Ithaca. Queen Penelope [Juliette Binoche] still refuses to remarry so that someone can formally take the place of the supposedly dead Odysseus, and this causes increasing tension between the men who are vying for their hand and the power that comes with it. Then a badly battered castaway [Ralph Fiennes] appears and claims that he was a member of Odysseus' expedition. Or could he be Odysseus himself? Beautifully filmed by Marius Panduru and excellently acted, but also slow and quite ponderous.

An old and well-known story, and fortunately on the main line without changes. That immediately raises the question of whether exactly this part of the Odyssey can yield such an exciting film - and at first I also found that a bit doubtful. But it gets better as the halfway point has passed.

Same with the images that are initially very ugly. It made me think that there must be a counterpart to beautiful filmmaking, and that is what Pasolini seems to be doing here. No idea what the plan was, or even whether there was such a plan or whether it was just unintentionally ugly. That is also possible.

Fiennes is strong throughout the film, but doesn't really do anything we haven't seen him do before. Binoche does, and he seems to be able to switch off all her usual mannerisms and traits - almost unrecognizably. Very clever, and I hope she shows that again in a film where it matters; here she actually plays too much of a secondary and unimportant character.

And of course a mention of 'our' 'own' Marwan Kenzari. He knows how to hold his own against the celebrated names, and escapes the stigma of a Dutch accent with flying colours. Nice to see him in this kind of production, there are not many Dutch people who could do that. Actually I know of almost none.
