Toen We van de Duitsers Verloren plot

Summer, 1974. It is the day after the lost world championship final between Germany and the Netherlands. It's quiet on the street and the city has a big hangover. Jonas bumps into Daan and although they are not friends, they hang out together on this dull summer day. They are both looking for their classmate Karsten, each with their own reason. Meanwhile, Catootje's missing hangs like a dark cloud over the boys.

On the day after the Netherlands lost the final of the 1974 Football World Cup to Germany, the somewhat dreamy 12-year-old Jonas [Rein Hoeke] is hanging around in his neighborhood when he encounters his tough, testy classmate Daan [Kylian de Pagter] who is looking for Jonas' friend Karsten. Together they visit Karsten's house. A neighbor is sure that he is on holiday with his mother in Torremolinos, a neighbor says that the family has returned home and has been visited by the police in connection with the disappearance of Catootje [Nora Beckers], the daughter of Jehovah's witnesses and a classmate of Jonas. The two boys get to know each other during their search and with the help of short flashbacks, Van Driel gradually reveals the backgrounds of these boys, but also the mystery surrounding Catootje's disappearance. The Dutch answer to Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show is a reconstruction of the Netherlands in the 1970s with great attention to detail and a triumph both visually and technically. The scenario is brilliantly designed, with all kinds of references to youth culture (the skippy ball and the lame puns). Everyone deserves praise, but I single out casting director Madelief Blanken. Because Hoek, De Pagter and Beckers are simply excellent in their complex roles. And remember: “Shame on him, shame on him, shame on him…”

Very entertaining film about the blossoming friendship between two boys, one a mourner, the other a bit more introverted. In the background the story of a disappeared girl plays, which in my opinion gets in the way of the film a bit.

At the end everything is neatly rounded out, which wasn't necessary. It all became a bit too sentimental for me. But the film gives a beautiful picture of the times, as evidenced by the sixties in the audience who continually sighed with recognition. The acting was excellent and at times I had to laugh. What else do you want?

Nothing wrong with the scenario, the staging (sometimes a bit too explicit - SRV car) and the atmosphere.

It's just a shame that the acting performances of the two boys are so variable: at times cringe-worthy and at other times it splashes off the screen.
