Orion and the Dark plot
"Hello Darkness, my new friend."
Orion looks like your average primary school child: shy, modest and in love. But beneath his seemingly normal exterior, Orion is a ball of adolescent angst, completely consumed by irrational fears of bees, dogs, the ocean, and murderous clowns. Every night, however, he faces his greatest fear: the darkness. So when the literal embodiment of his greatest fear, Dark, comes to visit, he takes Orion on a rollercoaster ride around the world to prove there's nothing to be afraid of at night. As the unlikely pair grows closer, Orion must decide if he can learn to accept the unknown - to stop letting fear rule his life and finally embrace the joy of living.

No, I didn't like this. Verhaaltje is a mixture of previous films, as Kappeuter rightly notes. But it doesn't really captivate, doesn't bring anything special and is just a bit boring. I didn't think the characters really came to life anywhere. And the film is sometimes too loud (if it wasn't already Illumination's standard hustle and bustle, fortunately). The animation is also very poor, both in terms of details and design. 1.5*.

It's about a boy who is afraid of everything. Also for the dark. Then the darkness comes to visit him and takes him on a journey around the world, causing him to lose his fears. Why this happens was not clear to me. Maybe the movie was too boring to pay attention to.

"Charlie Kaufman x DreamWorks Animation = Pixarian?"
Based on a children's book, Charlie Kaufman writes a children's film for the first time with a somewhat toned-down layering. His characteristic existential hobbyhorses remain unabated. It therefore feels at times like a Pixar animated film, but in a DreamWorks guise. The animation style is more playful and less rich in details. Still, it's a shame that DreamWorks (or in this case parent company Universal) didn't take the chance to release the film in theaters. Naturalness would be divisive, perhaps too boring and difficult for children and it is anything but successful (especially with touches of Ingmar Bergman and Woody Allen). However, it would be nice for them to show off a prestige title every now and then, which hopefully will not fall into the darkness of the deep Netflix depths where a few animation gems are still hidden.
For Kaufman, the real highlights seem to have been back for a while, and he rarely disappoints. 'Orion and the Dark' is therefore a surprising bright spot that does not make things too difficult for itself, but shows that you can always overcome fears and that there is ultimately room for perspective and perspective on everything.
Also a plus for the excellent voice cast, especially Paul Walter Hauser as Dark.
