Well acted, a few nice songs, but the poor script does not manage to bring the whole thing together coherently. There are (too) many time jumps that are only made clear because a few wrinkles have been added to the face, or because a child has suddenly grown a meter from one scene to the next. Can hardly remember the '85 version, but Spielberg (and Dutch screenwriter Menno Meyjes) must have handled it better at the time, therefore a slightly lower score.

Alice Walker, Oprah Winfrey. Quincy Jones and Steven Spielberg were directly involved in this modern, musical version of Alice Walker's novel, which Spielberg adapted into a film in 1985 with Whoopi Goldberg as Celie. Once again, the book's lesbian undertones have been left out, this time in favor of a more feminist slant, but thanks to Kris Bowers' excellent music, Fatima Robinson's energetic choreography and the enthusiasm of the cast, this is easily forgivable. It is the story of sisters Nettie [Halle Bailey] and Celie [Phylicia Pearl Mpasi] who and Celie [Fantasia Barrino] lose sight of each other. Celie must therefore learn to stand on her own two feet, but since her forced marriage to the aggressive Mister [Colman Domingo] threatens to destroy her soul. Sofia [Danielle Brooks] is a free-spirited woman who does not let anyone dictate the law and Shug Avery [Taraji P. Henson] returns triumphantly to the village on the coast of Georgia after years of absence - filled with gossip and backbiting. These two free-spirited women help Celie find her self-worth and fight for a life she has chosen.

Sit for a long time. Basically a fascinating story, but the Spielberg version was a sentimental dragon, this film is a little more subtle in that respect, but also not very uplifting. The acting is not great, the time jumps are far too big and abrupt to really follow along and the songs are actually quite mediocre. It's nice how that gospel sound can sometimes be heard, but a few days later I can't remember any of the songs at all. The atmosphere is strong, you can feel the clammy heat of that area through the white screen and the decoration is really nice. But that's about it. 1.5*.
