Katell Quillévéré wanted to make a formalistic ode to 50s melodrama. She seems especially indebted to Sirk's cinema, to the extent that the characters have to contend with all the social taboos of the post-war West: homophobia, sexism, racism, class inequality, collaboration suffering... You can already sense from this description that Le Temps d 'Aimer sometimes treats his subjects somewhat perfunctorily and occasionally you suspect that Quillévéré sees the much-needed 'schmaltz' from the melodrama too much as an end in itself. Yet at times the film transcends the style exercise and every now and then we are genuinely moved: Like a young daughter who will make it her life's work to read the entire library of her deceased father. The film has fortunately also about two extremely strong main actors, Anais Demoustier and Vincent Lacoste, who seem to be well attuned to each other. For the rest I have to say about this film, except the following: at a certain point the main characters decide to move to Châteauroux to run a dacing 'Rodéo'. Châteauroux is a desolate hamlet near Limoges. We are in France in the 1950s. At the time, Châteauroux had a number of cafés/bars/dances that were mainly populated by American GIs. Actually, they were more like glorified brothels, where the entrainees would be happy to have a drink with you - albeit for a limited additional charge. There are also half-hearted attempts at cabaret numbers, mostly hissy striptease. There is an atmosphere of rowdiness and the Americans are constantly fighting with each other. I am grateful to the film for this rare glimpse into this long-forgotten universe. That's probably how it went in Dancing Capri in the Hertogstraat in Heverlee, I dream out loud.
