Sages-Femmes plot

Sofia and Louise are two friends and roommates. They start their first day as midwives together. There is hardly time for childbirth. Thrown into the ward's daily routine of crowded hallways, delivery rooms and monitors, Sofia and Louise have very different first days. The stress of caring under constant stress soon puts a strain on their friendship.

The purpose of the film is to expose the understaffing in French public hospitals, the resulting stress among staff, the social and emotional consequences, as well as the mediocre pay.

A maternity hospital is an example and if the situations described there are reality, then the French government has a major item on its agenda.

Not without emotion, such as certain birth scenes, some of which were filmed live.

Good film, certainly successful in its aim, and at the same time an ode to the "sages-femmes", who are saddled with a heavy responsibility every moment of the day.

Léa Fehner paints a realistic picture of the lives of some maternity women and men in a public hospital. In part, it is an indictment of abuses in the healthcare sector as a result of cutbacks. There is a staff shortage and they do hard, stressful work for a meager wage. They have to make decisions about medical treatment in a short time, walking back and forth from one birth to the next in a hectic pace.

There are poignant stories among them. A healthy baby is unwanted, while another is stillborn. On the other hand, there are moving moments when things do go well. There are also funny interludes. The unknown actors appear spontaneous and unaffected. I really enjoyed this drama.

This drama about two novice midwives in a hospital maternity ward looks like a documentary. The hectic pace and the characters come across as authentic. A compelling film with excellent natural acting and excellent direction by Léa Fehner.
