This is a great film, which also fits perfectly in Luis Buñuel's oeuvre.

El is primarily a drama, but one in which the characteristic black humor, which Buñuel uses more often, regularly passes by. The main character Francisco, who is also well played by Arturo de Córdova, suffers from obsessive behavior towards his lover. Buñuel shows here an example of a seemingly ideal love couple, which is eventually destroyed by the obsessive behavior of the man. An interesting premise, in which the film follows the opposite path, compared to various romantic comedies, where the couple often seem made for each other in the end.

Although El is fairly straightforward, Buñuel manages to interweave a number of absurd and surrealistic scenes. Sometimes it seems that El is a kind of parody of the romantic comedies. It is a very nice parody, it must be said. Francisco's behavior eventually leads to a pretty spectacular finale, in which Buñuel manages to end this film in a stylish and beautiful way. Buñuel's usual themes around church and family values are also addressed in El. I had a lot of fun and can always appreciate these kinds of films.

Atmospheric, with strongly flared emotions, a well-drawn obsessive leading role and we have a good Buñuel at work who here depicts a mainly psychologically charged family drama.

Buñuel's films always pay off, even when they are stripped of a touch of surprising fantasy to surrealistic touches.

The ending of the film is clever, realistic and certainly better than what can be expected with such stories.
