Mediocre children's horror. The story is simple with unfortunately a somewhat stupid twist. Perhaps surprising for children but simply too silly for adults. The execution is reasonable. The structure is nice and the film contains a number of nice and exciting scenes, which are not always suitable for very young viewers. The main characters are also clearly in the mood and act well. Gibson plays along nicely. Visually reasonable but not always that good. 2.5/3.0

Monster Summer

In the summer of 1997, Noah's best friend is caught up in a mysterious event. Suspecting a supernatural cause, Noah, along with friends and a retired detective, investigates, leading to the discovery of a witch on their island.

I thought this was a great adventure film with a touch of children's horror. The story was quite simple, but it had a good atmosphere, was nicely told and the pacing was just right. It never got boring for me. Visually the film looked great.

The characters were likeable, with Gene (Mel Gibson) and Noah (Mason Thames) as standouts. Both actors played their roles excellently and added a lot of depth to their characters. The rest of the cast had a more supporting role and stood out less in terms of acting. The horror in the film is really aimed at children, so don't expect shocking or intense scenes - it remains light and accessible.

What I really liked were the small references to my favorite movie Jaws. The movie is supposedly set on Martha's Vineyard, the iconic location where Jaws was filmed. One of the scenes in the water is also a clear nod, where a boy is pulled underwater - an unmistakable reference to the classic. And there are more of these references to other movies.

It doesn't quite reach the level of a series like Stranger Things or a movie like The Goonies, but it was still a decent viewing experience.

3 stars.

A decent film about a boy who suspects something strange is happening on the island where he's staying. A nice setting (the summer of 1997 on Martha's Vineyard). The characters are somewhat clichéd, and they've all seen better films before. It's certainly not bad, and it's bound to be better for the target audience.
