There are few contemporary WWII films that can really touch me, but this is one of them, chapeau.

The story was completely unknown to me until a short report about it on BBC Breakfast yesterday, so I was actually quite curious about this Netflix production.

It has long been proven that Netflix stands for quality and this is again the case here.

The start of the film is quite superficial and provides a general theme, although the special effects, especially on the battlefield, are too artificial and too smooth to come across as realistic.

The film really gains some depth from the women's military training onwards, then there is no stopping it and the story flows like clockwork.

The approach to portray a minority group in a good light remains remarkably well-founded, not least because they constantly have to prove themselves to the white military leadership.

Although it must be said that the portrayal of General Hart is rather caricatural and rather unbelievable. Other drawbacks were the rather brief impression of the war around this gigantic post office and the rather tame background in which this film is set, especially since at the end of the war England was literally bombarded daily with V1 and V2 bombs.

Also the stone gravestones when visiting the cemetery...they were not yet available in Great Britain and were only placed later, on the permanent graves after repatriation.

Kerry Washington's sublime performance as Major Chiarity Adams was actually the biggest surprise.

It's still not too late to catch up on the Oscar race, as the awards are only handed out at the finish line.

I hope she has a chance.

This was cringe-inducing, I watched it with great resistance. How tiring it must be to be Tyler Perry. He spews out one film after another, often with the same themes and this man has certainly never heard of diversity. An incredibly one-sided, uniform sausage that I can't do anything with anymore. The film itself is full of Hallmark moments, sickly sweet overacting, exaggerated characters, with Dean Norris as a negative outlier. Still two stars because it is based on true events. *2.0

Seen because of that one Oscar nomination for Best Song. Now I have to say right away: I think that song is really quite decent, definitely my favorite of the five nominated songs (although this song will not win). The rest of the film tells a fascinating story in itself but is presented so sweetly that the film did nothing for me. Clammy, almost with a romantic look and nowhere did I imagine myself around the war. That first scene on the battlefield alone, that looked like a very clean version of the war. Not credible for a moment. The acting is otherwise not special or bad but does not help the film to a higher level. The first hour was easy to watch, the second hour was only moderately captivating. 2.0*.
