Leon [Thomas Schubert] has a deadline for his book and his good friend Felix [Langston Uibel] is working on his photography portfolio for his education. They hope to be able to work quietly in Felix's mother's holiday home near the Baltic Sea, which seems to be protected from the forest fires that are raging in the area due to its favorable location. Upon arrival it appears that mother has rented a room to Nadja [Paula Beer]. Leon in particular is disturbed by Nadja's apparently nonchalant behavior, but is also fascinated by her. Told entirely from the perspective of Leon, a frustrated, moody and therefore often unfriendly young man who, thanks to Schubert's captivating playing, never loses the viewer's sympathy. Beer is a beautiful enigma in a film that feels like a slow burner from the start and is overflowing with atmosphere. The only flaw (and it's a decent one) is that it falls short of expectations and ultimately fizzles out. Until then, this is a delightful, fascinating film.

Very much enjoyed Schubert's energetic playing in this film: he throws a ball against a wall 18 times and catches it again, helps a cyclist up, makes a phone call and takes a well-deserved rest on the beach.[/spoiler ] Impressive!

No, it's amazing how he plays a sulky guy that you initially chuckle at and then start to sympathize with. Because don't we all have those kinds of moods sometimes where we can't see beyond ourselves? The fact that Petzold doesn't need a traumatic event to explain his mood/helplessness makes him
all the more credible.

Beautiful subtle carpe diem drama that unfolds quietly.

Very nice video, although I don't know if it will stay with me for very long. It all flows nicely, which fitted in well with the tired-but-satisfied Sunday night state I was in.

I especially liked the character of the young writer. His whole life revolves around his second novel, which just won't work. This upsets him so much that he gets in the way of himself and his surroundings.

At the end the events suddenly follow each other very quickly, it doesn't have to be that way for me. And that final scene? Oh yeah. I usually think it's a weakness if we have to know how the characters are doing x months or years later, I think it's better to leave that to the imagination of the viewer, but I won't lose any sleep over Petzold being a made a different choice.
