The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari plot

This documentary follows New Zealand's deadly 2019 volcanic eruption minute by minute. 22 lives were lost. Based on stories from survivors and rescuers, the film tells of a day when ordinary people had to do extraordinary things, and places this tragic event in the larger context of nature, resilience and the power of our shared humanity.

Beautifully put together documentary, produced by Ron Howard and Leonardo Di Caprio, about the 2019 volcanic eruption on the island of Whakaari, off the coast of New Zealand. The interviews with the rescuers and especially the survivors are quite moving, just like the chilling images made on the day in question. The documentary artfully increases the tension, without falling into cheap sentiment.

Whakatâe is a small coastal town on New Zealand's North Island. The local economy relies almost entirely on tourism as it is 30 miles from Whakaari, also known as White Island. On September 9, two boats and a helicopter carrying tourists depart from Whakaari for an excursion to the island, but the visit turns into a nightmare. This documentary is entirely devoted to the stories of survivors, relatives and rescue workers. That sounds impressive, but the stories are broadly identical, which means that it is regularly repeated. It would have been much more interesting if Kennedy had spent time asking why people left for Whakaari in the first place on that fateful day. But he's clearly more interested in a heroic story than getting to the bottom of the rock.
