A little humor, a little drama. Just not enough to stick. It is mainly the acting performances that make this film an acceptable whole, plus the beautiful images of Lourdes. Maggie Smith is virtually indestructible.

Put 3 good female actresses together with film and theater experience and you get real life with all its quirks and vices linked to some of the 7 sins. Brilliantly framed film work, beginning and end for example, but also the framing of an Irish village and Lourdes, as if you are going back in time. The non-verbal acting is of a higher level. The influence of faith in the community, linked to the travel goal that can be achieved through a performance, also paints a beautiful picture of dreams and limitations. All this at the end of the 1960s, where the rise of feminism is also lightly touched upon. Recommended if you like drama-comedy.

Chrissie Ahearn [Laura Linney] returns to her hometown of Dublin for the first time in 40 years for her mother's funeral. The unveiling coincides with an annual talent show for charity, with the main prize being two tickets for a bus trip to Lourdes. Coincidentally, Chrissie's mother also left three tickets and on the advice of the priest, Chrissie decides to have two tickets given away by the church and keep the third ticket for herself. Not entirely coincidentally, the other two tickets went to Chrissie's former best friend Eileen [Kathy Bates] and her mother's best friend Lily [Maggie Smith], who played an important role in Chrissie's decision to leave Dublin for good. In the hands of a less talented cast, this would probably have become a sentimental dragon. In her feature debut, Agnes O'Casey (as the “winner” of the talent show) holds her own alongside her excellent co-stars.
