Eight former school friends gather for a reunion at a vacation home in the woods on the weekend of Juneteenth (the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the US). When Shawn [Jay Pharoah] and Morgan [Yvonne Orji] arrive to get things ready for what should be a festive weekend, they come across an offensive board game called 'The Blackening'. They play the game, with disastrous consequences that spill over when their friends arrive. The screenplay by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins is clearly inspired by the original Scream and has a touch of Saw, but gives it a twist all of its own. It also refreshingly pokes fun at the obsession with the meaning of 'being black', including when they have to determine which of them is 'the blackest'. Quite exciting at times, but this is especially funny, also thanks to the excellent performing cast.

Still quite original in some way. A bit bland in terms of humor. Lots of dialogue, sometimes white trash talk. In the end it isn't much horror. That way it becomes more of a silly comedy. Not that the concept was bad, the villains are quite weak so it doesn't become believable anywhere. Mediocre slasher, you certainly don't need to see it for the kills.

A half-successful parody of the familiar clichés that horror films have frequently put on screen in the past. It was mainly a matter of waiting for an answer like The Blackening, but unfortunately, director Tim Story relies too much on rather childish jokes and characterizations. Several cast members are excellent actors, but completely corner themselves in rather infantile toilet humor. The atmosphere is also remarkably skillful, which makes it all the more unfortunate that the overall tension is lacking. The concept of that game is quite amusing, but it's abandoned too quickly. It's clear that horror isn't Story's primary genre, but he still neglects it too much. Incidentally, I wouldn't rule out that a lot of references and jokes flew over my head.
