Pitch-black satire about a future overpopulated society in which citizens can receive large sums of money from the government if they volunteer to die. Due to the limited location of the action, things feel quite stagey, but the solid cast (especially Enrico Colantoni is great here as Bob) knows how to handle the sharp dialogues and the balance between drama and humor is mainly well struck by director Caitlin ( daughter of) Cronenberg. Towards the end things go off the rails a bit, but hey, that's funny. By the way, Dad Cronenberg does the voice-over for the DOCS commercials that come along.

Due to a lack of food, water and raw materials, all countries have agreed to significantly shrink their own populations within a year. A euthanasia program has been established in the US that mainly – and successfully – targets immigrants. So when former CNN news anchor Charles York [Peter Gallagher] and his wife Dawn Kim [Uni Park] announce at a family gathering that they too have signed up for voluntary euthanasia, it comes as a shock. After Dawn leaves because she has changed her mind, a man named Bob [Enrico Colantoni] comes by to claim his two “cadavers.” And that means that the family members present have to fight over who will sacrifice themselves. Ecological black comedy is uneven in tone thanks to a high degree of exaggerated acting. The unappealing cast doesn't help, even though the premise is interesting and Michael Sparaga's screenplay asks intriguing questions about the human instinct for survival. Directorial debut for David Cronenberg's daughter, who can be heard as a voice-over in the obituaries.

In essence, the premise of Humane is very interesting and wonderfully conceived, but the execution by director Caitlin Cronenberg leaves too many stitches undone. In particular, the far too prominent presence of humor ensures that the seriousness of the situation disappears, so that there is never a certain form of threat or suffocation. The characters are not badly acted (Enrico Colantoni in particular does very well), but the actors go too hard into caricatural types that are more annoying than realistic. Despite the fact that the whole thing has a number of good points, it never feels like a situation that could be considered possible in the future. Towards the finale, the film gains strength again, but throws all that potential overboard for a weakly written ending. Ultimately, the whole thing offers too little bite and guts to leave any kind of impact, but because of the content design it remains unpredictable and intriguing. Hopefully daughter Cronenberg dares to strike a bit harder with her next film.
