The public debate about the reintroduction of compulsory military service also flares up in the Netherlands (especially around election time). Cultivating discipline, solidarity and self-confidence are among the arguments of the proponents. But if you are part of a country surrounded by hostile neighbors, you cannot avoid military training. In Israel, military service applies to all men (2 years and 8 months) and all Jewish women (2 years), but not everyone is suitable for it. Since participation in an armed struggle is a realistic prospect and not every young person supports Israel's military role in the world, suicide among prospective conscripts is not uncommon. A fascinating subject is given a somewhat manipulative effect when Davidi visually links images of children to fragments from young people's diaries that make it clear why they are about to end their lives. Much more effective are the home videos in which the young people in question are seen in their final years.
