Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion plot
"A Mother's Terror is Forever."
It has been four years since the dead mother of 25-year-old Rini came back to life and took her youngest brother with her. Now she lives with her two other brothers, Toni and Bondi, and their father in an overcrowded cheap apartment. They think this is safer than living alone and secluded. One day, however, the area is hit by a severe storm and the apartment is isolated from the outside world. Rini and her family discover that everyone is gone. When the lights go out, an unseen threat creeps in and Rini suddenly finds herself in a life-or-death struggle to save her family.

With Impetigore director Joko Anwar suddenly found the right tone after a number of almost films, which makes it a shame that his next project is simply a sequel to one of those almost films. This sequel is very reminiscent of the first part and almost exactly the same criticism can be applied to it. It looks neat and atmospheric with a number of excellent sequences, but fails overall to build up the necessary tension and/or introduce interesting characters. The events escalate relatively quickly, but then continue for far too long with situations that are very similar. The lack of variation ultimately weighs heavily, although the content is full and busy enough to remain convincing. Hopefully Anwar will choose his own universe again with his next film and not a sequel, because he has proven that he does have the necessary qualities.
