Its acceptable. The story itself is pretty good and there's a lot going on. I don't like the use of black and white / desaturation, just give me color. And then Will Smith... I don't care that he gave someone a bitch slap, but I just don't think he's the best actor, maybe nice in comedies but he still falls short in serious films. He also fails to convince in this film. He has a strange face throughout the film and his fake accent really annoyed me. I would have preferred to see a different (better) actor. Other than that, not a bad movie, it all looks pretty nice.

Good film about a slave who manages to escape and has to make a hellish journey. Not exactly an original story and the characters are also quite clichéd, but well filled in by Will Smith and especially Ben Foster. It also remains entertaining and reasonably exciting. The film looks good with nice camera work and the swamps are raw and stripped of almost all color.

Very nice monochrome images of the swamps in Louisiana, yet it feels a bit like a trick to create more drama. Will Smith as an escaped slave with an annoying accent and a strange face. The story is about Wipped Peter, slave and soldier who escapes from unscrupulous slave drivers led by Jim Fassel played sublimely by Ben Forster. Peter tries to reach Lincoln's army in the hope of freedom, but here ex-slaves are used on the front lines as cannon fodder and freedom must be fought for.

The film is sufficiently captivating and portrays this time in America in a revealing way: a few loose limbs more or less are not skimped on. It never gets really gruesome and the tension does not rise to the top, the director stays on the safe side. Suitable for the general public, but certainly not an outlier within the genre.
