Will Smith faces serious barriers if he has hopes of ever winning an Oscar again.
At the 2022 Oscars ceremony, Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard. However, earlier in the evening, he made headlines around the world when he stepped onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock across the face after the comedian made jokes referring to Jada Pinkett-Smith's alopecia.
His actions were nearly universally criticised, while his subsequent apology video posted online a few months later was labelled by many as being insincere.
Smith received a 10-year ceremony ban from the Academy following his actions, but it is not known at this point whether he will still be eligible to win any awards.
That could be relevant with regard to his upcoming movie, Emancipation, which is already generating Oscar buzz.
The movie is based on true events and tells the story of a slave during the American Civil War named Peter, who escapes a Louisiana plantation and makes his way north to join the Union Army.
In May of 2022, the release of Emancipation was delayed until 2023, and many critics believed this was due to the negative publicity surrounding Smith.
However, it was eventually confirmed that the movie would be released in cinemas and streaming on Apple TV + in December of 2022.
