My Father's Dragon plot
After moving to the city with his mother, Elmer has a hard time getting by. The lad runs away and sets out to find Wild Island and a young dragon waiting to be rescued. Elmer's adventures introduce him to wild beasts, a mysterious island and the friendship of his life.

The movie itself. Analogous to the Irish animation films by Tomm Moore, I had expected something from this. Twomey was even involved in the films Song of the Sea (Film, 2014) and The Secret of Kells (Film, 2009). And I also found The Breadwinner (Film, 2017) quite enjoyable.
It also started excellently with a description of the difficult situation of a single mother and her son. The realization of their dream of opening a shop in the city is jeopardized when the few savings reserves have to believe it. Nice raw and depressing start. The drizzling rain and grumpy landlady emphasize the general mood of the individualistic city.
When the whale and the dragon show up, the picture of the movie changes. More childlike and immediately more annoying. Simple indeed, not to say 'simple'. I missed the magic of the earlier films. There is also little cult about it. It sounds like a fairy tale, but it lacked conviction. I saw little link between the actual and the fantasy world. Unfortunately.
