Dachau - Death Camp plot

The hideous nature of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis' plan for world domination was clearly defined by the concentration camps they conceived, built and used. Until Germany was finally liberated by Allied forces at the end of World War II. Dachau was the first such camp to be built by the Nazi regime and used as a model for future Nazi death camps. In these places of terrible sadness and terror, the memories of the inhumane Nazi atrocities are delicately shared by those who were imprisoned there. Through interviews with survivors and relatives of prisoners, this documentary traces the cruel history of Dachau.

I caught this Dachau documentary at the last minute on Monday, and while it's horrific to begin with, it's always interesting if you're interested in war. Especially regarding the concentration camps, how did it get to this point? How are people capable of such things? Unfortunately, the documentary was a bit disappointing.

Because, to start with the negatives, the documentary begins rather abruptly and rather haphazardly. Several survivors are immediately put in front of the camera without any explanation or introduction—which isn't really necessary, as the name Dachau speaks for itself. However, there's no clear structure or anything like that, and the whole thing feels messy and chaotic throughout. Of course, there are also positive aspects. The emotion is palpable, and we have the standard gruesome images so we never forget.

Yet, I find it a real shame and a missed opportunity, because Dachau is a major player in that regard, and for me, no less so than Auschwitz, and at least as significant because it's located in Bavaria and was used after the war to detain Nazis and war criminals awaiting trial. A notorious camp doctor named Sigmund Rasher, who experimented with hypothermia and low air pressure and was on par with his colleague Mengele, was also active there. Furthermore, Dachau was primarily used as a prototype camp, primarily for political prisoners. And with this in mind, this documentary does very little, and much information is left out.

Nevertheless, the footage of the cleanup efforts and the forced attendance of the population is powerful. Incidentally, I was under the impression that Band of Brothers was referring to Dachau, but it turns out to be a subcamp of Landsberg. As mentioned, the documentary has some strengths, but as a whole, it falls short. It does receive a passing grade, but that's all there is to it.
