Fire girl Ember [Leah Lewis] is forced to team up with water guy Wade [Mamoudou Athie] to save Ember's father's [Ronnie Del Carmen] store from being shut down due to a leak - and a number of other irregularities. They grew up in the belief that water and fire don't mix and then young viewers probably know how this will end. The obstacles that the four writers have come up with along the way do not testify to any originality either. The only (relative) surprise is that the denouement is even more sentimental and sugary sweet than you expected.

Pixar always appeals to me, but this is one of the least. Not a bad movie, and it looks fine, but it really lacks the magic. It never reaches the level of Toy Story, Finding Nemo, or the more recent Soul. I don't see any chemistry between the two main elements, which I kind of expect from a film that is all about the relationship. In addition, I was busier with the question of why certain things simply did not catch fire when they touched it. Something tells me this isn't supposed to be, if it further distracts from the story.

The funniest jokes appear in the trailers. There was more to it in my opinion.

I found Elemental quite successful. Very nicely done, especially visually. The water city was very nicely depicted. With the current techniques and budgets you can do very amazing things with water. The city was somewhat like Zootopia (Film, 2016): futuristic and stylish. Unfortunately, the film is not balanced enough. The film makes it appear to be talking about the four weather elements, but two of them are almost quickly thrown overboard. It is only about water and fire. A bit unfortunate and misleading really.

Water and fire are then worked out better. Funny here and there, not always innovative, but quite enjoyable. Furthermore, it is rather socially oriented and the message of (climate) refugees is very clear. The outcasts who live in the suburbs and never really belong, the misunderstanding and the prejudices, it is all carefully discussed.

Sometimes the film is also a bit sloppy. As WB puts it, people are not always consistent about what should or should not catch fire. Well, you can't let everything burn or you won't function anymore, but still. I also found that cloudy mistress to be a bizarre character with motives that I did not understand. Why did that Ember want to show that flower? And actually, far too little was done with that flower, because if I understood correctly, that plant was about the only thing that really connected all the elements. But all in all an OK film, a narrow 3.5*.
