"Every heart tells a tale."
The 1930s. One evening the lifeless body of a young man is found dangling from a rope. Retired detective Augustus Landor is assigned to the case and starts an investigation. He is assisted in this by a young cadet, Edgar Allan Poe, with a penchant for drink and two collections of poetry to his name.

Mixing personal drama and occult mystery, The Pale Blue Eye ultimately tells two stories. In theory, those stories should complement each other seamlessly, but in practice it is contrived, because the cross-connections ultimately break up the story and make it overly explanatory. The careful image direction (with sufficient breathing pauses between the scenes) and the atmospheric view of a wintry snowy landscape keep the first major Netflix film of 2023 fascinating for over two hours.

Good movie in which a detective is asked to investigate the death of a cadet. A fairly standard structure for this murder mystery that takes place in the 19th century and remains entertaining enough. Atmospheric with a nice soundtrack. A good cast with Harry Melling most impressive in the role of Edgar Allen Poe.

Translation of Pale is, among other things, faded, bland, lackluster, in my opinion this is also the correct description of this much too long film. A series of well-known actors is no guarantee for a good film, that is clear. It's just too boring and didn't interest me for a moment. I always get annoyed by small details in a movie, I can't help it. Two women clearly had stark white crowns on their teeth, in the 19th century? Is it too much to ask to make it a little dirty and yellow? nitpicking, I know. One more thing, I thought Anderson was a very weak performer, and I didn't think Bale was fantastic either....
