Filmmaker Julie Hart [Tilda Swinton] arrives with her mother Rosalind [Tilda Swinton] and her dog Louis at an old and somewhat sinister hotel where Rosalind used to frequent with her sister. Julie's tense discussions with the clerk [Carly-Sophia Davies] about the hotel room and late-night noise disturbances are juxtaposed with encounters with friendly hotel guest Bill [Joseph Mydell] in a movie that might spark interest with Swinton's (meaningless) dual role and ominous musical score, but it's not going anywhere.

Like Hogg's two previous Souvenir films, this film also seems autobiographical - the main character is a filmmaker who wants to make a film about her relationship with her mother, which apparently resulted in this film - and the film balances between fascinating and boring (something happens little), but just like the first Souvenir film, this film is in the right direction and I think it is a beautiful film. Psychologically, the drama unfolds that the mother has more and more bad memories in the house where she grew up, while the daughter has always wanted her mother to be happy and does not know what she did wrong. The film deliberately uses the elements or clichés of the gothic ghost story, from the mist-enclosed old abandoned house that is haunted at night to the twist at the end and the message that dead loved ones live on in our memories and our lives. heart (to which the title also refers), but does so intelligently and in a way that generates a certain tension and ultimately surprises.

Not 100% convinced about this movie. However, the film does many things well. Not that it is that difficult to create some gothic atmosphere with this setting. The old hotel looks a lot like a creepy castle, especially with the fog hanging around and the countless trees on the grounds. There is a constant grimy atmosphere that we have seen in many other films.

The decor inside was also impressive with many details and old-fashioned rooms and wallpaper. The receptionist is also mysterious, well, at times rather surly and not very customer friendly. As if it was too much for her and her daily departure late at night looked more like a flight as if she absolutely did not want to spend the night in the hotel.

In the end it all fizzles out. Not much happens either. An excellent double role by Tilda Swinton. The small climax at the end certainly didn't cut it for me. It was a bit too long to wait for Godot for that.
