The rattling of the keys.

Claudel stars in Dangerous Minds, casually weaving in a mosaic video clip as an afterthought, while also holding a side job as a supermarket manager. But what is it that draws Alexis Pasquier into the hidden world of prison—is it the secret of the world hidden from ordinary people, is it the mystery of who all these people are and what drove them to their actions, is it the hope of helping them, of bringing them back onto the right path? Or perhaps all of these at the same time.

In lesser hands, that would become a cheap and lazy affair, but Claudel finds a nuance and depth in it that few directors can master—without wasting a single syllable, he reminds you, for example, that in every family, within a degree or two, or at most three, there is someone who plays a part in this film. Clever work by Cyril Descours, the way he conveys something enormously detached in his facial expressions while his inner self is so searching and needing—and thereby the absolute polar opposite to the ever-more beautiful Déborah François, who carries her soul on her arm, with facial expressions that are more palpable than volumes can speak.

A film to think about for weeks to come, and to hold hours of discussion about.
