Murder at Yellowstone City plot

"In a town of suspects, one man stands accused."

Montana, 1882. Former slave Cicero arrives in Yellowstone City, a desolate city in decline. Cicero is looking for a place to feel at home. On the same day, a prospector is promptly murdered after a successful find. Sheriff Ambrose then arrests the newcomer. But as the mystery of the prospector's murder deepens, and the sincere clergyman Thaddeus questions whether Cicero is really guilty, a clash between faith and law threatens to tear Yellowstone City apart.

Reasonable western with a few familiar faces (actors). At the moment there are very bad westerns in circulation, this one was a bright spot

Long drawn-out western film that has too little substantive added value to justify a running time of 127 minutes. The film, which I initially assumed fell under the horror genre, was shot at The Yellowstone Movie Ranch. This location was used (at least) eight (!) times in the years 2021-2022. This appearance is somewhat confirmed by a somewhat run-down murder mystery event in which the search for the killer is simply not interesting enough. In between, director Richard Gray succeeds in creating some atmospheric images by using the environment and details, but the film never becomes truly spooky, exciting or mysterious. Positives go to nice acting from Gabriel Byrne, Thomas Jane and Isaiah Mustafa as well as an entertaining exchange of bullets during the finale. However, it is too much of a good thing in this drawn-out film, in which the female characters in particular are portrayed in a particularly uninteresting manner. Slightly tighter and more focused direction would have done a film like this more than good, but Gray may have had to leave the field quickly so that the next western project could be filmed there.

A western about freedom, where one person chooses the right path and the other the other. Freedom for Mustafa "Cicero", who has been freed and survived a Civil War, Jane "Thaddeus" who lives a rough life as a gunman. and seeks his freedom in the Lord, then McGowan "Dunnigan" who finds his freedom by finding gold, together with Garcia "Isabel" who actually wants to be free and get away from her profession. Then there is Blake "Dreyfuss" who, together with his friend, want to be free from their homosexuality at that time and Thompson "Emma" who wants to be free from her husband "Dunnigan" and start a new life together with Wolff "Jimmy" who actually Emma seeks freedom from trauma due to the death of his mother. In all this, Sheriff Jim Ambrose, well played by Byrne, is the one who tries to keep everything together in his own way. Ultimately, only one person is free in her life and that is Beatty "Violet running horse" despite the fact that she is the only survivor of a massacre caused by the US army. The film was played a bit flat with sparse text. It lacks the grimness that was common in those days. After more than 1 hour there is a twist and the film rises above itself. Perhaps exec. producer Richard Dreyfuss is still involved?
