The new Mungiu is strong again, but not as good as 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days and Bacalaureat. The first hour is mainly a meandering portrait of a society that is struggling. A Romanian village where many inhabitants have moved away, so there are no staff there either. In the second half, the film gets more focus and is about the resistance of the villagers against a couple of Sri Lankans who have started working in the village because the local industrial bakery can no longer find employees. With a beautiful scene in which the village spews its bile. The second part is also good but not too subtle. And the film contains a number of side branches that are not entirely convincing (the father-son relationships, for example). There is still no end to the enviable number of good and relevant Romanian films.

The film shows how Romania – like other European countries – fell into the grip of xenophobia after the end of the ideological conflict through the fall of the Wall and world trade with its open borders (where political correctness and influence of Western Europe is perceived as the new communism). The core is that Romania's economy is in a hole: Romanians have gone en masse to Western Europe, e.g. Germany, for work, so that companies in Romania in turn have to recruit labor migrants from countries such as Sri Lanka, which has met with great resistance encounters in the Romanian village of the film, especially the Hungarian minority, which itself is foreign. After the gypsies and the Hungarians, the migrant workers from other parts of the world are now the scapegoats of a people who are themselves seen as inferior and uncivilized by Western Europe, which is also symbolized or explained in the film by the fact that bears still live while they live in Western Europe. -Europe have been wiped out: people are wary of wild animals that come to disturb the peace and perhaps they are the wild animals themselves. Because the economy is in ruins, Romania is dependent on subsidies from the EU in exchange for which Romania has to give up some autonomy and the EU is seen as the new dictatorship that subjugates the Romanians.

The story ripples on and at the same time is not easy to follow, which perhaps reflects the complexity of the situation, but which gives little viewing pleasure without becoming annoying. The film aims to give an MRI scan of Romania (MRI in Romanian is RMN) and succeeds well, with the diagnosis not being good, but it does not result in a very fascinating film.

After seeing the film, the diagnosis is clear: village, region, country and Europe are in very bad shape and better hang themselves ... or have I missed a bright spot that can offer a solution?
