My four stars actually only apply to Lucille Ball's phenomenal acting in this typically American TV production. Typically, through the cold settings of a messy New York as we all know it. And typically because of the urge to tear up and the too-easy happy ending, which obscures the hopelessness but gives the audience who usually looks away a good feeling. My consolation is that perhaps Ball's acting will stick - the woman who is as happy as a child with the nothing she has left. Wow, what a role!

I only knew Lucille Ball from The Lucy Show; I must have watched countless hours of that back then. But in this film, she proves she can do much more than that cliché character, even though it is just a TV movie and she doesn't really get any serious opposition from any of the other actors.
Still, it seems to me that the film was one of the sources of inspiration for Gilliam when he was working on The Fisher King (1991), and as two vastly different sides of the same coin, the films together actually form a brilliant diptych demonstrating that you don't need grand plans and a mega-budget for a good film—just a bit of talent and some goodwill. And someone willing to see that in it.
