Amanda [Sandra Oh] lives with her adult daughter Chris [Fivel Stewart] on a remote farm where she raises bees and has success selling honey. Because Amanda is extremely sensitive to electricity, local shop owner (and purchaser and distributor of the honey) Danny is the family's only friend. Until Amanda's Korean brother [Tom Yi] visits unexpectedly to deliver the ashes of Amanda's mother [MeeWha Alana Lee] (the Umma of the title). From then on, Amanda is plagued by terrifying visions that make her increasingly hostile towards her daughter. Close the curtains and turn off the lights. Not because it's so scary, but because otherwise you can't see what happens during the night scenes. Has some nice scares but the biggest plus is Oh.

Sandra Oh's acting is above average and a number of horror images make a striking impression, but director Iris K. Shim does not get much further than a completely exhausted basis and a lot of drawn-out stupidity. Shim was equally committed to the scenario and might have done better to obtain feedback from multiple perspectives, because the eventual finale is so silly that the (bonus) points are plummeting rapidly. The cast members do their best to turn all the fanfare and trivial ideas into a continuously interesting whole, but without tension, atmosphere or good concepts you are soon faced with too great a challenge that can no longer be overcome. If Shim hopes to convey some of the Korean culture to the Western world, she will have to produce better quality than Umma.
