Alcarràs plot

Traditionally, the Solé family gathers in Alcarràs in the summer to pick the harvest from their peach orchard. However, this year could be their last as they risk being evicted. There are plans on the table to cut down the orchard and install solar panels. This causes a rift between the close family members, who face an uncertain future.

The film immediately starts with the discovery that it is nowhere on paper that the Spanish family in question owns the land on which they grow peaches, so that they are defenseless against the landowner's will to replace the peach trees with solar panels. Then we watch for two hours the struggle, struggle and desperation of the family who have to come to terms with the fact that their life as farmers is over. The film thus fits wonderfully with the current farmers' protest movement in the Netherlands, although the specific problems for farmers may vary per country and nitrogen seems to be the direct cause only in the Netherlands: for example, the beautiful French film Au Nom de la Terre (Film, 2019) showed all the suffering of the French farmer, who cannot survive either. However, I don't find this film that gripping: we mainly watch a family drama in which one can and the other cannot adapt to the new situation so that they get into a fight, adolescent children who suffer from the tensions and small children who play happily until their toys are gone. Just like Estiu 1993 (Film, 2017), the film is realistic, but the family drama never becomes special and unlike Estiu 1993, the film knew – perhaps because we have heard so much lately about the suffering of the peasants – not to touch me.

Under pressure from developers, a farming family has to vacate their farm and land at the end of the summer. Three generations try to make the best of it, but due to the low purchase prices and financial concerns, tensions in the family are increasing. Atmospheric drama presents an authentic picture of a Spanish family farm with strong work by Josep Abad as the grandfather and nestor of the family and Ainet Jounou (as granddaughter Iris), whose playing, like that of her peers, is completely natural. I would have liked to have seen a little more story, but as an atmospheric portrait this certainly succeeded.

Drama about a farming family that, due to a past negligence, is on the verge of losing its orchard and thus its source of income. This naturally leads to tensions within the family. Fortunately, the small children are not affected by this.

An atmospheric family portrait that benefits abundantly from the natural acting of the entire cast.

I can warmly recommend L'Albero degli Zoccoli [aka De Klompenboom] by Ermanno Olmi (1978) to fans of this film.
