In the middle of the nineteenth century, the inhabitants of the countryside of Småland are having a hard time. There is a famine due to bad harvests. The farmer Karl Oskar Nilsson and his wife Kristina decide to emigrate to America with others from the rural community, including the village whore Ulrika, in the hope of building a better life there. Remake of the 1971 film of the same name.
