Downton Abbey: A New Era plot

"A cinematic return."

After receiving a royal visit from the King and Queen of Great Britain, the Crawley family is now preparing for a new adventure, a vacation to France. Violet Crawley, the Countess of Grantham, has come into possession of a spacious villa, which she has acquired thanks to an old childhood sweetheart. As usual, a visit from the Crawleys comes with a lot of drama and not everything will run smoothly.

Despite the excellent cast and the refined production (including fine camera work), this is no more than a soap opera made with a large budget. To the surprise of her entire family, Violet Crawley [Maggie Smith] announces that she is handing over a villa in the South of France that her family knew nothing about to her great-granddaughter. Part of the household travels to put things in order on the spot and find out how and why Violet came into possession of this villa. Downtown Abbey itself is in turmoil because a film crew has paid a lot of money to shoot a major Hollywood production. The first storyline is far-fetched, the second not exactly credible, but the neat production almost makes you forget that.

A significant improvement on the first Downton Abbey film, which was mainly bland and exaggerated. This time around, the plot and characters are more in line with the series, and the film benefits from a clever script that jumps back and forth between two different storylines, both very entertaining. All this results in a fittingly melancholy finale, in which a prominent character is said goodbye, without whom the series actually has no further right to exist in my opinion. Let's hope that Downton Abbey has finally come to an end with this fun, energetic and, above all, smooth film.

Wonderful 'nothing to worry about' film in which you can immerse yourself and let yourself be carried along. Started out a bit boring, but more than enough happens in the end. That villa in France was of course a golden opportunity for variety. Very small petty mystery, which of course you already know is nothing. Costumes and entourage, locations, everything tiptop. Only, if there is a sequel, then unfortunately we will not see Maggie Smith again. She was a little too nice in this movie, for my taste.
